We will work with hands and feet to smoosh flesh in symbiosis of pairs or guilds of 3 or 4. Obtaining Nutritional Adequacy Through Fungi as Food: Cheap, Sustainable, and Easy
This talk will be focused on breaking down the vast spectrum of nutrients (macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, and myconutrients) present in various fungi foods: whole mushrooms, mycelium (tempeh and other myceliated products), lichen, etc. Although fungi may not be able to deliver all essential nutrients or wait... can they? The first part of the speech will revolve around different categories of fungi food sources, briefly listing specific carbohydrates, fats, and micronutrients that can be sufficient and sustainable daily sources of essential nutrients. The second part of the speech will go into how we can incorporate/cultivate these foods into our habits in order to gain nutritional adequacy (cultivation, foraging, very brief culinary uses). Lastly, the speech will then go into how we can also use fungi as a vector for a nutrient supplement through molecular farming and/or bioengineered mycelium farming. Arguably fungi are the most cost-effective, sustainable, and quickest way to nutritional adequacy.

Fungi, Art, and the War on Nature
Mushrooms and art have long been intertwined. Fungi is the foundation of our evolution as a species, and for thousands of years, humans have depicted mushrooms in cave drawings, petroglyphs, mushroom stones, early European Renaissance oil paintings, and more. Some believe that ancient art provides evidence of the ritualistic use of psychedelic mushrooms, too. In part one of a two-part talk examining mushrooms, art, and the war on nature, Angel Schatz from the Central Texas Mycological Society will take you on a mushroom trip around the world, from present-day India to Siberia, Greece and Guatemala and more. She’ll highlight key mushroom art from around the globe and discuss research from leading historical scholars and ethnomycologists. Open your mycelial mind and experience art, culture, and history through a new lens!

Our Mind on Nootropic Mushrooms: Ancient Wisdom meets Exciting New Research
Explore the undeniable nootropic mushroom movement and dive deep into the many mechanisms medicinal mushrooms employ to optimize brain vitality. We will outline the traditional uses, constituents we care about and plough through new research on fungi brain allies such as lion's mane, reishi, cordyceps, psilocybe, maitake, wood ear and poria. Medicinal mushrooms can restore balance via impacting the immune system, lipid ratios, blood sugar, hormones, neurotransmitters and oxidative damage. They have the power to revitalize neural pathways, cerebral blood flow, fatigued tissues and entire ecosystems. And unlike any other, they have the capacity to reconnect us to the planet, humanity and ourselves.

In recent years Cordyceps species have exploded into the awareness of the general public, and the popularity of entomopathogenic organisms and their eccentric mode of nutrition continues to steadily climb. Cultivators across the globe choose to grow Cordyceps, either for the high monetary value they fetch, or for their use in alternative medicine. Attack-of-the-killer fungi, Cordyceps and related genera have captivated the masses in true horror show fashion. During this class no gory detail will be spared as we go in-depth to discover the fascinating necrotrophic relationship between a fungus and its insect host. I will draw upon my background in biochemistry and drug discovery to create a fun learning experience about the chemistry of Cordyceps. The medicinal value of Cordyceps, including their history, methods of extraction, and active principles will be discussed. Contact Improv Workshop
Though we each have established movement habits, aka muscle memory, for things like
walking, lifting, shaking hands, sitting down and getting up, the precise conditions for each of
these movements is different every time. Such as walking on uneven ground, or forming our
hand to contact a hand that we’ve never shaken before. Just as mycelium expands into new
terrain, highly conscious, adapting, and collecting data, our bodies are constantly engaging in a
“spontaneous dialogue with the environment”. As adults, the experience of movement occupies
less of our conscious awareness than earlier points in our development.

Contact improvisation is a practice of attuning consciousness to the immediacy of an
environment, and disrupting the autopilot of movements typically relied upon. This invites
interoceptive cues (data from inside an organism) to become louder, and transform into novel
movement experiences.

This practice can be pursued alone, or in energetic and/or physical contact with others. As an
individual practice, these exercises can improve coordination between muscle groups that don’t
typically collaborate, heighten awareness of one’s internal space, and decrease risk of injury. As
a group practice, we are invited to challenge the concept of an “individual body”, just as the
convergence of mycelial networks creates a being greater than the sum of its parts.

The Biology Behind the Zombie-Ant Fungi
The ability to infect insects arose multiple times along the
evolution of Fungi. However, none has shown such broad and
sophisticated strategies to infect, persist and transmit spores than
the so-called “Zombie-Ant Fungi”. These fungi evolved the ability
to make their hosts to leave the colony, climb up to a summit
position on plant parts and bite onto the substrate. The infected
ant remains attached by locking its mandibles into the plant tissue,
which is often further reinforced by fungal structures. Few days
after the host’s death, the fungus erupts from their bodies to grow
structures that will shower spores on the forest floor, eventually
infecting new workers that forage on ground. They also developed
a broad range of morphologies, adapted likely in response to the
host ecology and morphology. In this talk, I will present how these
behavior manipulators arose and which strategies they have
developed in order to thrive and spread through several species,
becoming a diverse fungal group.

Funga and Fauna: The Interaction of Wildlife and Fungi
There is no doubt that fungi plays an important role in our forest’s ecosystems, from mycorrhizal associations with trees increasing water uptake capacity to decay fungitransforming Nitrogen in downed wood into a form usable by plants. But how do fungi interact with the wildlife that reside in our forests? Lorelle will explore the role fungi plays in creating wildlife habitat, as well as the role of fungi in wildlife diet. Through this exploration, we will illuminate the systems and interconnections in place between funga, fauna, and flora in the world’s forest ecosystems.
